Messier Marathon 1st April 2011
|
We are holding a Messier Marathon on the above date and this exciting event is open all ages (although children must be accompanied by a responsible adult) regardless of ability. For those of you that do not know what a Messier Object is, they are objects that were classified into a catologue of objects to avoid if you were hunting for comets. They include M42 the Orion Nebula, M13 globular cluster in Hercules and M45 the Pleiades to name a few.
You too can take part in trying to hunt down as many as you can with binoculars (any size) and earn yourself an exquisite certificate from the Dalgety Bay Astro Club. There should be 99 of them visible on the night. Children will be expected to spot at least 20 to qualify for the certificate.
This should be a great evening and everyone is advised to wrap up warmly and bring a flask of hot drink although we hope to provide these on the night along with some bikkies. If you don't have a pair of binoculars then there will several pairs available for loan on the night. We also hope to have a few telescopes present and a demonstration of simple astrophotography. All attendees will receive a tick off sheet with the contellations map and the number of objects in each constellation but you will have to locate them within the constellation and have it verified by one of the club stewards :)
Further information can be had from Geoff Ruzgar club publicity officer on 01383 432296.
